General Fund
Donations to the General Fund permit the Shalem Network to allocate resources to where they are most needed across Shalem’s ministries. These donations provide the most flexibility to the Network. Please consider directing your support in this way!
Why? Because the need for Gospel-driven supports is growing dramatically. Consider the growth in the Network’s numbers from 2013-2015:
Your support to the Foundation makes it possible for the Network to meet the rising need. Thank you!
RE-create
An open arts studio in downtown Hamilton, ON, where street-involved youth can reconnect to themselves and others through the creative arts. RE-create’s dynamic program connects at-risk youth to their creative side, helps them to express their stories, and links them to art opportunities. Compelling research in the field highlights the positive impact of art-making on the mental health of at-risk youth.
RE-create staff and volunteers are full of stories of young people whose lives have been transformed. Don’t miss these video vignettes about RE-create!
Remarkably, RE-create accomplishes this on a budget of $60,000 per year. Currently $20,000 is brought in through small individual donations. World Vision Canada’s beautiful three-year commitment of funding ended in 2016. We are looking for 1 to 3 partner donors to commit to a total of $40,000 per year for three years in support of RE-create’s vital work. Your support will set up RE-create for the long haul. Will you consider partnering with youth at risk in this way?

WrapAround
WrapAround is a community-based way of responding to people who have big needs that are persistent, overlapping and mutually reinforcing—needs like mental illness, severe poverty, health concerns, special needs, all happening at the same time. WrapAround builds on what people can do, not what they can’t do, it wraps community around people, and it puts people in charge of their own lives. And the evidence is clear: it really works, better than any other kind of approach.
The Shalem Mental Health Network is a national leader in WrapAround. Through its leadership in Wrap Canada and the WrapAround Association of Ontario, the Network has Training and Coaching contracts with Healthy Child Manitoba, five youth-gang prevention programs funded by Public Safety Canada (in Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg and Montreal (X2), and one funded by Ontario’s Ministry of Child and Youth Services, in Brampton.
In addition, the Network operates the volunteer-driven WrapAround Hamilton program, where community volunteers facilitate WrapAround with 40 families. And we support churches to do WrapAround—WrapAround is a truly effective way of organizing and sustaining the God-given impulses within a congregation to care for the most vulnerable members of their communities.
Our WrapAround budget is $150,000. About $60,000 of that is covered by grants and training contracts. That leaves a gap of $90,000 per year, a gap which simply cannot be made up by fees to people in extreme poverty. We are looking for 1-3 partners to support WrapAround at $90,000 per year for three years. Your partnership will truly make a difference!
Counselling Assistance Fund
The Network’s Counselling Centres (in Hamilton and the Durham region) served 469 clients in 2015. The issues ranged from couples going through hard times in their relationship to adults dealing with the aftermath of childhood sexual abuse, foster and adopted children who have experienced significant early trauma or neglect, young people engaged in self-harm, people dealing with anxiety or depression, youth and adults who are suicidal. Badly needed counselling has sometimes saved people’s lives.
Like all of the Network’s programs, its Counselling service is a Ministry. That means the Network does not turn people away because of an inability to pay for services. Of course, smart business planning is needed—and is in place. But fully 45% of the Network’s Counselling clients could not pay the full fee for their Counselling. The Network has a sliding scale to accommodate everyone. Your support makes this possible. Please consider partnering with people who are seeking help by supporting their ability to get help through the Network. This is one way that true community is born. Thank you!
